A Park with a History- Colorado River State Historic Park

With that in mind, we thought you might enjoy being directed to some of the great areas in the region that focus on that aspect of our locale.

Colorado River State Historic Park

The Colorado River State Historic Park was opened and dedicated as recently as 1997, but its history stretches back to more than a hundred years before that. The state park is located on what used to be part of the Yuma Quartermaster Depot (QMD) established all the way back in 1864.

It was built on a high bluff over the Colorado River to allow for the ferrying of supplies from the California by way of the ocean. The QMD served as a storage yard and military supply center for fourteen military posts in the region.

Things to See

The first place you want to see will be the visitor center for an intro into the history of the depot and see a model of the depot as it was in 1872. Over in the storehouse you can find an army escort wagon, a section of the original plank road with a Model T, a display of steamboats, and other antique wagons and farm vehicles.

The Office of the Depot Quartermaster is a period room display of the personal workspace of the quartermaster. The Commanding Officers Quarters is a historic house furnished to the period when their families resided there in the 1870s. There’s also the Corral House as well as plenty more exhibits outside.
